Thematic Interpretation

All my interpretation starts with a compelling theme and know, feel and do objectives.

  • Writing sign panels, indoor and outdoor exhibits, self-guided nature trails
  • Interpretive planning

Publications

My publications range from magazine articles to columns, radio scripts, brochures, annual reports and handbooks for agency and nonprofit groups.

  • Brochures: writing and editing
  • Feature articles, readable reports, newspaper and radio columns
  • Website text and electronic newsletters

Review comment: " Thanks again for creating by far the best refuge educational piece I've seen in years."
Phil Million, USFWS
(March/April 2003 W.O.W. children's magazine 16-page feature on National Wildlife Refuges)

Wildlife Viewing and Birding Trails

My handbook, Providing Positive Wildlife Viewing Experiences, will give you a good summary of my knowledge and views on this growing field. I've spoken at several national watchable wildlife conferences on subjects ranging from ethical dilemmas to influencing conservation.

I coordinated the Bitteroot Birding and Nature Trail and am currently producing a birding and nature trail handbook.

Media Relations

I develop media strategy, key messages for targeted audiences, and writing and circulating press releases. My work ranges from national-level wildlife campaigns to local publicity for the Bitterroot Birding and Nature Trail.

  • Media campaigns
  • Press releases, opinion pieces, speeches, public service announcements

Workshops

I teach interpretation, writing and wildlife viewing workshops. I also co-teach interpretive writing with Janine Benyus, author of Biomimicry, Innovation Inspired by Nature.

Review comment: "You set high standards, yet create a very open atmosphere, marked by the respect |you give each participant. I personally found the two days to be inspiring and immediately useful in all my writing endeavors. Your session has been one of the highlights of our training academy."
Jane Weber, Director, Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Interpretive Center
